What the monuments hide: Underground Stalin's Bunker at a depth of 45 meters

Classics of the genre: it's 2 am on the street, three people are hurrying towards one of the city squares. All three of them carry backpacks, but the man in the middle, in addition to the backpack, can also see a huge bag in his hands. Why exactly with him? Nothing unusual - three chipped in on "tsu-e-fa". While they were getting to the intended point, the package had time to move from one to another. What these people had in mind might have seemed complete nonsense to any casual passer-by - stop and ask. Just think for yourself: who else in the middle of the night would come up with an idea to get into a Stalin's bunker as deep as a 12-storey building? Anyone would doubt this idea, but our heroes are enough confidently walked towards their goal - a monument in the middle of the square. Moreover, they had no doubt that everything would work out.

A place:

- One of the first deep Soviet bunkers, built on the personal order of Stalin by the end of the Great Patriotic War.

Short description:

- The bunker is at a depth of 45 meters. It was built during the Great Patriotic War by order of Stalin for ... Stalin. However, the need to evacuate the supreme commander did not arise at one time, so the facility was used only as a command post. Now he is over 70 years old, for this age he is surprisingly preserved. But, alas, it can no longer play the role of a shelter. All because of the complete non-observance of the norms for the operation of life support systems.

Having reached their destination, the three put on assembly vests so that their actions would not arouse suspicion among people passing by, if, of course, there are such ones at 3 o'clock in the morning. After that, the guys began to lay out all the contents of the package on the foot of the monument: two 30-meter ropes 10 mm thick, several carbines, a harness, two zhumars, as well as a couple of crowbars and gloves. The most interesting lay ahead.

What is all this for? How did the guys even know about once one of the most secret objects in the country? It's simple: Any government documents classified as "secret" have a certain period after which they must be declassified. So in this case, several years ago the government published another interesting documentation, where it was mentioned that under the ********** area there is a huge special object. The information was supported by a diagram according to which a bunker with a total area of about 1200 square meters was located at a depth of 45 meters. According to the same scheme, the bunker had 2 exits. One is in the basement of an existing military building, the other is somewhere near the monument. The first option of getting into the bunker was considered undesirable, but the second seemed quite real.

From the entire arsenal laid out at the monument, both scrap were used first. Two guys took an instrument and began to gently tap the foot of the monument, trying to find underground "voids". Within 5 minutes, such "voids" were found. Despite the confidence in the forthcoming success, such a discovery turned out to be quite exciting for our heroes. After another 5 minutes, they were already trying to displace the plates in the place where the sound was more dull. Everything worked out. The coveted edge of the rectangular hatch became visible under the concrete, and the excitement grew stronger and stronger.

The hatch was not welded, it did not weigh several tens of kilograms. It was the most common piece of sheet metal, covering the passage downward so that tiles could be laid on top. With a slight movement of his hand, he was pulled out from under the tiles and laid down next to him. Three men bent over the passage to the ground, directing the light of tactical flashlights there.

Classics of the genre: the one who climbs in extreme - collects and transfers all the equipment to his comrades. So it is now. First, Second, take things, Third. Just a few dozen steps - and our modest team in full force finds itself in a small room 5x5 meters. What was quite expected, this is where the first difficulties appear. This room is a kind of "dressing room" of the object. Through it, electricity, heating and ventilation are supplied to the bunker. That is, it does not seem to perform the role of entering the object. Nevertheless, in Soviet times, there was a kind of door here, right behind which there was an approach development (upper level) leading to the shaft. But now this door is not there, in its place is a solid concrete plug. What to do?

The eyes of the three fell on the head of the ventilation pipe protruding from the wall. We remove the grate, shine inward. 5 meters crawling, and then the pipe goes abruptly downward. It was then that climbing equipment was used.

It is difficult to describe in literary words how it all happened. At first, the three argued for a long time which of them would climb first. The prospect of getting a good dose of rust in the face from the one who climbs next did not inspire anyone. But even here everything was decided "tsu-e-fa". Then the loser somehow, but still dared to descend. Another 30 minutes, and all three climbed out of the "crumbling" pipe into a lighted walker. It was a lower level walker.

Classics of the genre: it is at such moments that one becomes uncomfortable most of all. In the moments when you are in an object that almost no one knows about, when you do not even know what to expect around the corner, but you still go to the goal. The tense situation at these moments is even more "heated" by the hum of electricity. I don’t know why, but it’s real.

This time the guys were lucky. Nobody from the possibly expected personnel of the special facility was around the bend, and the pressurized door was open. Even despite the fact that the bunker has already been declassified, it is still considered a rather important object, which means it is maintained and guarded.

From the walkway of the lower level, they enter the second, last barrel. The first team crossed the pipe in parallel.

There is a technical crane for lowering heavy things, as well as a passenger lift, which was shut down in 2002.

Further down the stairs.

Stepping quietly up the steps, the team slowly moved down, periodically stopping and listening to the sounds of the vision.

The hum of electricity seemed to remind that one should not relax for a second. At any moment, the guys must be alert and ready to run.

And now they had almost gone down to the bottom of the barrel, when suddenly a loud and drawn-out sound was heard from the object, similar to the roar of an engine. Three froze to the spot. One of them immediately remembered the case with the operating military bunker of the Ministry of Emergencies, when no one noticed the motion sensors, but they came to trigger from the inside. But a minute later the roar died down. The seekers of the unknown, it seemed, stood for a very long time on the last span of the trunk, listening attentively to the silence, before deciding to descend below. But when they came down, they acted very confidently.

Disabled Soviet elevator with manual door:

Before leaving on a walker leading straight to the object, three stood and for about a minute "stuck" to the trunk. Such a depth and such a scale is very addictive and exciting.

Elevator:

And here is the walker himself. Among all the approach workings, this one is rather peculiar. She wags in zigzags before leading the object to the hermotambour. This was done so that the shock wave from a nuclear explosion could be damped as much as possible. And there are as many as 3 pressurized doors in the vestibule, and not 2, as is customary in most civil defense facilities.

View from the walker into the barrel:

Going deeper:

As expected, electricity, hot and cold water were piped into the facility from the trunk and further along the walls.

Walking along such a walk, the team was amused that behind the next turn - the same picture. Three walked, walked, and waited for the walker to finally lead to the object.

But no.

Again, no.

Finally, the zigzags ended. It is unclear why the fire extinguishing means are located right here, on the outside of the pressurized door.

And here is the hermotambour with an atypical number of protective doors:

Once.

Two.

Three.

Having passed the airlock from the pressurized door, the guys found themselves in the technical corridor of the facility.

There are various rooms for staff: communication room, battery room, etc.

Almost all the doors were closed, no one from the team began to break them.

Eventually the corridor leads to a small room with two bathrooms and a door. Well, everything is clear with the bathrooms, but upon opening the door, three froze. None of them have seen anything like this.

A room for the sheltered was located behind the door. And how long do you think it is?

But this ...

The only strange thing is that there are a lot of seating places. Places where armrests do not interfere with lying down will be further, but they are incomparably fewer. In the diagram, this tunnel is greatly reduced so that it does not seem cumbersome.

It's incredibly atmospheric here! Especially realizing that you are deep underground. And the paint that periodically crumbles from the walls and ceiling gives the place an incredible entourage.

If this tunnel can be called a block (usually similar underground rooms in bunkers are called so), then right in its center is another block, perpendicular to the first and smaller one. Without exaggeration, it can be called the most important in the bunker.

It is divided into two parts. The left side - "Lungs", this is the ventilation system of the entire facility. You can easily see that all the pipes on the ceiling are led there. However, everything is deplorable here. All filter ventilation units in the ventilation unit were either cut down or were not installed at all. This is one of the reasons why this bunker cannot fulfill its tasks.

The right side - "Heart", the power supply of the object. Here everything is already much better, they did not skimp on a whole transformer substation.

Since the facility does not have its own diesel generator, Soviet designers solved the problem of backup power supply in an original way: electricity is supplied to the facility from three power plants at once, and in order to deprive the facility of electricity, the enemy would have to disable all of them. There are transformers in this room, where the high current is converted into the usual voltage. Well, as usual. Judging by the fact that all the light bulbs shine rather dimly, the mains voltage in the facility is somewhat less than 220 volts.

There is also something interesting and unusual for a GO facility: an oil-cooled transformer.

A panel room with a bunch of switches and fuses, all of them have been working properly for over 70 years!

And the scales of the measuring instruments still accurately show the mains voltage.

Let's go back to the sheltered room. Three went further along it, and everyone wondered how long it was. It is hard to imagine, but the entire facility was erected in just 13 months! Now, during this time, not every residential building has time to be built, what can we say about the modern metro building.

Even where the lighting ends, the tunnel itself does not end. The light simply does not work in it for some reason.

Ultimately, however, the tunnel leads to a turn.

For which ... What do you think?

That's right, the continuation of the room for the sheltered.

By the way, exactly here, right behind the wall on the right, is the headquarters of the object. The entrance to it is located at the end of this tunnel.

Opposite the entrance to the headquarters is the second exit from the object, but first, let's get acquainted with the headquarters.

At first, there were absolutely empty rooms with lamps that were quite atypical for a special facility.

Then I came across rooms with something interesting. For example, here is a board on which the meteorological data of different settlements should be kept.

In the next room, telegraph devices were found:

And, finally, the most interesting thing: like a dessert left for last, the most distant rooms of the headquarters hid the meeting room of the GO operational group.

So, the meeting room of the task force of the object. As it should be, it is equipped with information posters about nearby strategically important points at which there is a possibility of an accident, about the organization of civil defense, about the zone of possible destruction during a nuclear strike, and so on.

And finally, the second exit from the object.

Here's what you need to pay attention to: in front of you is a row of three protective-hermetic doors, which in the case of the hour "H" should save the sheltered from the shock wave and radiation. And everything, it would seem, is good, but ... Pipes! In the right corners of the doorframe, we see ventilation and water supply pipes, which simply deprive all 3 doors of the ability to close! This. Generally. How.

In this photo (back view, from the exit side), the pipes are on the left, and are seen more clearly. In reality, the doors will not close in any way. Apparently, the communications were laid in this way initially, upon delivery of the object, since there is no ground for them in the concrete wall.

A few meters from the vestibule - turn left. Then a little more - and the tunnel abuts against the closed lattice of the trunk.

This barrel is not as friendly as the first one. As mentioned earlier, it leads to the basement of a military building, where an armed guard is on duty at the entrance to the facility. Therefore, a team of three brave explorers decided to leave the facility the same way they came here.

PS I don’t remember how long it took to get to the surface, but it seemed incredibly long. Classics of the genre: a blow of a fresh gusty wind in the face and a heavenly glow from the sun that has not yet risen over the city. All this seems extremely unusual and even magical after many hours of walking underground.

PPS When visiting this bunker, not a single monument was damaged. The slabs at the base were tapped and moved with extreme care, none of them was damaged and all were returned to their original location.

PPPS Dear employees of all government services (including those repressing society for the sake of protection from a big enemy), as well as those who like to fight for the history of the Fatherland, for architectural monuments, or just patriots! If any of you have reached this post (which, of course, is extremely unlikely), then we want to contact you. Please make a museum out of this bunker! It's not as difficult as it sounds. We believe in you.

Thank you for the attention!

  1. Thanks for the story!
Why is there a light everywhere, do you know? The unused object is the same.

    1. Так это под Куйбышева же. Конечно, объект номер 2.
